There are many waterfalls in Nikko area. Kegon Waterfall is one of the great three falls in Japan, measuring about 96.3m in height.
The others are...
The Kegon Falls basin, that you can see up close from the observatory reached by elevator is impressive. There are two observatories (upper : free, lower : paid) and you can see the spectacular appearance of splashing water with the sound of the explosion. It falls down a precipice consisting of quarts and lava. The precipice was formed by the eruption of Mt. Nantai, thus creating Lake Chuzenji.
The Akechidaira Ropeway is not located in the same area as Kegon Falls, however, this observatory is a little-known spot to view both Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji. Since it is a sky-high observation deck, there are no trees that obstruct the view, you can see a panoramic scenery from a distance. If you are lucky, you might encounter the Kegon Falls covered with a rainbow.
Generally, the waterfall runs full from June to September, and stops between December and April, though there is a device to draw water to the fall through an underground pipe. The view of the frozen waterfall in winter is also magnificent.
Why not come explore the Kegon Falls during your Japan tour's free day in Tokyo with an optional excursion tour. We also offer custom Japan tour packages and luxury travel options to include Nikko and the rest of what you want to see during your Japan vacation.
